Chink chink chink.

I sat in the foul-smelling recliner adjacent to the two television monitors - one showed an Asian cooch that slobbered on the cocks of three grinning studs who lounged on a blue couch, the other monitor was the security camera with a static, black and white view of the sidewalk outside the box office window and the entrance to the theater.
Outside, always like clockwork, stood for hours night after night, an old, white haired relic in lime green pants, sneakers, yellow polo shirt, and baseball cap.
His rattling dentures chewed obsessively on a wad of gum - his mouth a glistening wet hole. Squinted, gooey eyes darted – yet, his body never moved. He stood in a position as if he was ready to pounce on whatever victim he deemed worthy. The only movement was his right hand in pants pocket jiggling change - chink, chink, chink, chink - forever.
Darting past him, a tall, rotund man in khaki shorts and summer shirt, quickly strode up to the box office window and pressed his bearded face against it. Condensation formed on the glass.
“Hey, man.” He rumbled with that distinctive southern Californian accent. “I don’t wanna see a movie - I just wanna buy some porn.”
My boss also sold a vast library of accumulated porn that he kept in the office. Occasionally, some jerk would come in off the street or from the theater and purchase one or two videos.
I stood up, walked to the window and buzzed the man in from a button next to the register, “Okay, come on in.”
I flopped back into the easy chair.
Behind me, taking up the entire wall on a bookshelf, were six tiers of porn. All kinds of shit - from your straight-laced, crack-addicted blonde bitches to those gay fisting horrors. All covered in dust and greasy, smudged fingerprints on glossy boxes. The bottom shelf contained candies, dried soups, and small bags of pre-popped popcorn.
The man came to the concessions window, “May I come in?”
“Yeah, sure.” I said, not looking at him, my gaze focused on the flickering image on the monitor. I wanted to get this fat fucker out quick, because my high was cranking down.
“Lessee lessee lessee…” He breathed as he perused the selection. He would occasionally pick up a box, scan the back - replace it with a “Hmmm. Oh. Hmmmm…”
Ding! Someone was at the box office. I stood up to see a quivering meth junkie standing there outside - eyes sunken in his withered skull, jaw chewing loudly.
“How much, man? How much ta git in?” He spastically spat.
“Six dollars. You can stay until six in the morning - I shut down for an hour to clean up.” I stated mechanically.
His head darted from side to side, “Right. Right. Gimme a ticket.” He slapped the bills on the counter.
I handed him his ticket and buzzed him in. I returned to the easy chair and flopped back down.
Then, the fat bastard who was perusing the porn - the fucking pervert - stood in front over me, swaying his bloated, hairy, pale belly in my face. I grimaced as I noticed a small lump moving within his khaki shorts. Asshole must’ve thought I’d just have sex with anybody - fuck that, I got standards!
I waved my hand in front of his gut; he smelled of cheap lotion and sweat, “Hey, man - cut that shit out! You wanna buy a tape or what?”
He backed up - eyes scanning the selection of videos, “Nah…nothing really here. Just gimme a ticket for the theater.”
I bolted up exasperated, snatching the bills from his hand and passed him a red ticket at arm’s length. Nonchalantly, he walked through the rose colored, velvet curtains into the cinema.
“Asshole!” I hissed under my breath.
I shook my head in disgust as a black guy popped up in front of the concession stand.
“Hey, dude - you workin’ all night, again?” He smiled, which was an appalling thing to see.
His eyes were popping out of their sockets; the small skull could hardly contain the distortions of withered skin. The voluminous lips were white and chapped - deeply grooved like a corpse. I found his face comical - nothing but eyes and lips.
I had seen this cat before - a regular customer. He usually arrived before my shift began at eleven and remained all night doing his dope. He never caused any problems and kept to himself.
“Hey, man - how’s the theater?” I smiled back, putting the money from the previous pervert into the register.
“Sheeeet - it gettin’ crazy in there.” He rolled those egg-sized eyes. “It looks like a damn rock concert with them lighters flickin’ all ovuh.” We both chuckled as he continued. “You hungry?”
Before I could answer, the box office door bell dinged and on the monitor was a pizza delivery boy.
I glanced at the screen, then back to the junkie at the concession widow, “You ordered pizza?”
“Yeah! It here?” He slobbered.
I buzzed the delivery guy in and the junkie paid. I grabbed a folding chair from the office and sat with the junkie at the door entrance to the main cinema.
Between the steel door that led out of the building, there was a short, dark hallway that connected with the concession widow and, directly across from the steel door, the entrance to the cinema itself. The door to the cinema was draped in mildew spotted, thick rose-colored velvet curtains.
There was already an extra folding chair in which he sat. Usually - and to this day I cannot fathom why - one or two patrons preferred to sit or stand at the draped entrance, hence the extra folding chair. I guessed it gave them privacy from being seen by the audience or allowed them to scam on potential victims sitting in the theater.
We placed the pizza box on the dirty, carpeted floor and began chomping. He then pulled a small, glass pipe from his shirt pocket, placing it up to his lips - flick! Inhaled the smoke - the cherry made a crackling sound.
I smiled at him, cocking my head inquisitively, “Hey, what’s that? Speed?”
The junkie exhaled, shivered. “Nah, white boy, dis crack. Ever try it?”
“Nope.” I replied.
“You wanna?” He asked.
“Sure, why not?” I uttered as I took the filthy, charred, glass pipe from his gnarled, chapped hands.
I put the end to my lips and he ignited his lighter. Popping sounded from the crack as I sucked in the gray smoke.
“Hold it in…hold it in.” He coaxed.
Master and student.
The effect was much like meth - but the rush was quicker and more intense. My heartbeat tripled, short of breath. I could feel the blood pumping into my face. I shivered uncontrollably as if wrapped in a freaky orgasm.
He leaned close, took the pipe from my limp hand, smirked. “Now don’t go on and hava heart attack, boy.”
I sat and felt the drug bounce around in my system – it was fucking great. A rush of pleasant heat flushed through my body as I clicked and twitched in jerking movements.
On the large screen in front of me - a black stud slid in and out of a blonde bimbo with rapid ferocity. She screamed and squealed in amped-up, crack induced orgasms. Her face was contorted, her eyes bugged and gleamed in smeared eyeliner - hair cascaded across her face with each viscous lunge.
His body was wet with sweat - the intense concentration of a maniacal killer on his masculine face as he pumped. The theater smelled of chlorine, farts, and dried semen. All colors and smells were crisp and differential.
I felt better than I had in recent memory - a chaotic, warm glow enveloped me as nostalgic images raced through my frying mind. Then, it sputtered and stopped.
What the fuck? I thought. What happened?
“It supposed to switch off like that?” I asked, face forward, eyes sweeping in his direction.
He passed over the pipe, “Yeah, that’s why you take another hit, white boy.”
I did. As he devoured his pizza like a veracious animal - I sucked on that glass pipe so nasty.
Again, the hot, pinging buzz enveloped me on a cellular level. I sat and took it all in – then, a few minutes later, it sputtered out like on old generator.
“Goddamit!” I muttered.
I began to put the pipe back to my mouth. The junkie stopped me with a foul smelling hand, “Hey, hey, boy - this shit ain’t free. You want some more, slip me fiddy, I’ll give ya and yer good to go.”
Fuck that shit! Fifty dollars for a rock? That gave me - what? Two, three hits? Shit - for fifty dollars, I could get five or six good fat lines of meth and be ‘good to go’ for eight hours straight. I stood up and wiped the grease from the pizza off of my hands onto my pants.
“I gotta get back to work.” I mumbled.
“You gonna leave me like dat? You ain’t gonna buy shit o’ wut?”
“Nah - uh, thanks. I’ll be in the office.” I said with my back to him, folding the metal chair.
I returned to the office and reached behind the pile of porn boxes for my aluminum strip. As I took a hit, I glanced at the security monitor - there was the old, white man there. Chink chink chink.

breathing loud

The night shift continued. I stood and made a paper cup of instant coffee. The current movie ended and as I was switching videos in the VCR, a wave of unbearable stench filled the small office space - it was the smell of rotting death.
I glanced over to the box office window and noticed two bloodshot eyes that gleamed at me - black spots in the corneas, like bad marbles. Only the neck up was visible - a bald, wrinkled head blotched with liver spots, scabs, white flaky skin. Gray shadows encircled those predatory eyes; thin, hooked nose ended in long, greasy, white nose hairs. A toothless hole grinned that caused the entire sickly face to wrinkle up.
“Uh…excuse me…” He wheezed in a high pitched voice. His eyes - those fucking eyes - never left mine, no matter how I swayed and fidgeted. “Do you show any homo-erotic films at this theater?”
His voice shot up an octave at ‘homo-erotic’.
“What?” I snapped, trying my best to be annoying to this fucker just so he'd just leave.
Every time he exhaled, a wave of rotted matter filled the room.
“I asked if you show any homo-erotic videos here at your theater.” He scratched his bald head with pudgy, dirty fingers - dead, dry skin flaked off - a frayed hospital band dangled at his wrist.
Under a dirty, brown coat, I noticed that he wore powder-blue hospital scrubs over a fat, squat body.
“Nah, against city ordinance. We only show straight porn here.”
His eyes glazed over and stared at my chest as if in a trance, “You see, in Manhattan - that’s New York City - they show homo-erotic videos - wonderfully, wild, exciting gay films with beautiful men having sex with each other…”
He paused, squeaking out a rapid fire of giggles that pinged in my mind like needles.
His face went blank and dreamy, “Are there any military men in your theater?”
I pondered, took a sip of my coffee, “Well, I think there were three navy guys that came in about an hour ago…”
Slap! Clackclack! Slam! Before I could finish my sentence, the old perv slapped six dollars down on the box office counter, bolted through the turnstile, and flew through the metal door entrance to the theater.
Five minutes later, three young Navy recruits stumbled out of the theater - hands covering noses, waving palms in front of their faces, looks of disgust.
“Damn! That fucker stank!”
“See how that old fag followed us everywhere?”
“Shit! His fuckin’ intestines must be rottin’!”
They marched into the night and back to base.
A short time passed, standing with my back to the concession door, I put the straw to my mouth and lit up some more dope from the charred strip of aluminum foil that I had stashed behind a pile of empty video porn boxes.
My chapped lips stung as the plastic heated - the smell of melted plastic and chemicals assailed my scarred nostrils. I stood there and faced the wall - teeth ground uncontrollably; air whistling loudly through my nose.
“Hey, man.” Rumbled a bass voice behind me.
I whirled around to see a mountain of a sweaty, googly-eyed black man standing at the concession door. He wore a do-rag on his head and a torn wife beater in a vain attempt to cover an obscene, hairy potbelly. His face was slack; covered in a fine layer of glistening grease. He smelled of spoiled bologna and stale farts.
“Yeah? Whutsup?” I wearily asked with gummy lips - my tongue swirled in my mouth like a writhing slug.
My eyes felt as if they protruded from their sockets, but I tried to keep my cool. Focusing my gaze on this glaring behemoth, I slipped the foil back behind video boxes.
“Hey, man.” He stated - staring.
A long pause.
“Yeah? Wuchawant?” I asked, glaring back.
Click click click went my tongue on top of my mouth.
“Hey.” He spat - eyes voluminous and yellow with black irises and no color. The man was flying high on some crazy shit. “You by yourself?”
“Uh…” I glanced quickly at the aluminum baseball bat by the cash register.
“Cause you a perty fine white boy an’ these movies can make ya horny.”
“Glad you like the movies, sir.” Clenched my grinding jaw.
“Hey.” His eyebrows began to shoot up and down - fat lips drooping. “You game? Ya wanna? Huh? Ya game? Huh? Ya game? Ya wanna?”
“Well, I can’t…I mean, I’m working.”
“Ya wanna? Hey, boy, ya wanna? Ya game? Huh? You wanna?”
Tired of this shit and wanting to get back to my dope, I stated firmly, “Look, dude, you gotta stop bugging me and return to the theater or I’m gonna hafta ask you to leave.”
He stood there a beat - glared with that vapid gaze of Hepatitis C - breathing loud in his sweat-stained wife beater, then faded back into the murk of the theater.

Orgasmic Death

Outside the rain came down in hissing sheets. It was the middle of the night - yellow glares of lamplight flared through the rain that splashed upon empty, gloomy streets. No cars, no people out this night.
Huddled in between two vacant warehouses - as if trying to shield itself from the downpour - squat the Rialto Theater - one of the last adult cinemas in downtown San Diego.
In 1970’s pimp font, Rialto Theater hummed in a blue neon glow. The marquee - rusted from years outdoors and ringed with burnt, sad, ambiguous bulbs - buzzed loudly in the muted hissing of the rainy night; barely lighting the red-brick building of the degenerate cinema.
Inside the theater, sat a yellow mop bucket, coated on the outside with putrid green and brown slime, contained, to the brim, coffee-colored water that rapidly dripped from the leaking ceiling.
The dark, rose-colored halls vibrated with the gasps and grunts of random, broken lust from the video being projected onto the huge movie screen that illuminated the fifty theater seats in a pornographic, strobing glow.
Like burnt out, sallow-eyed zombies, the ten or so patrons stared transfixed at the blonde cooze that screeched in a crack-induced frenzy as a tired middle-aged jock pumped her million dollar snatch in weary apathy.
Every few seconds, nestled down in the dim blue of the audience seats, there would be a flick of a lighter and then the red glow of a glass pipe from over half of the attending patrons. The large cinema was hazy-gray with the wafting vapors of exhaled crack or methamphetamine smoke - mixed with the random cough and slurps of sordid, decadent activities.
At the cinema’s entrance, I sat in a small, oblong office and listened to the whispers of the rain outside trying to drown the moaning crackling over the speakers from the theater.
Slumped in a ratty, stained old office chair, my feet propped up with a spiral notebook on my lap, I put pen to paper and attempted to knock out a hack-eyed science fiction story that mixed Buck Rogers with Chinese Kung Fu movies.
Colt Corrigan across the Galactic Lens was the title I had thought up. Wiping sweaty grime from the nose piece of my black, horned-rim glasses, I also thought how unpalatable the title was.
I readjusted my glasses and my eyes focused onto my scuffed, black, thin-soled shoes which stuck out from dirty jeans that I hadn’t washed in weeks. The stained tank top t-shirt (Used to be white, now a grungy yellow) was covered by a cracked, black leather jacket - my father, a fag hating, wife beater in his own right - called my usual attire, “The uniform of the obvious homosexual.”
With the calming hiss of the rain outside, I contemplated on how I had been employed at this filthy, foul-smelling theater for the past six months. On how, working the box-office graveyard shift in a rundown porno theater could really ebb away the old ego and on how much inwardly I completely loathed it.
What the fuck was I thinking when I took this stupid ass job? Summed up my dismay.
However, the job did have its perks. Like, conning some junkie creep who would approach the window and after dramatically recoiling at the forking over of those bills, would then happily pay with a bump of meth to enter them pearly gates.
This would happen a few times during my shift and I usually spent the rest of the evening lit off of my ass from free dope.
The manager, I believed, was wise to my shenanigans, but was either dumb to the fact or simply turned a blind eye.
I recalled a few mornings before, far after the sun had come up, around 7am - my manager Bob, an obscenely obese, bearded queer - made a surprise visit and took over the morning shift.
I stood there and counted out the register - me a clicking, clacking mess, beads of sweat pouring down my face - teeth grinding loudly. I had been smoking dope all night and not rightly in the mood for any of his shit.
“What’s the matter with you?” He asked in that whining way fags had when asking the obvious - laced with condescending, sneering imperialism.
Clikclikclikclik.
I straightened up, eyeballs ping-ponging around my head. Lips dry and twitching.
I sputtered, “Nothing, Bob - tired. Too much coffee - just a night full of crazies, you know?”
He stood and stared at my vibrating form, let out a dramatic sigh like only queens can that had honed the act over the years, and then shuffled bitchily across the office - waves of acrid sweat assaulted my nostrils.
He poured his massive buttocks into the office chair, it groaned and creaked in protest, “Well, do not forget - I have my spies here at night keeping an eye on you. So, you best be doing your job and not spending the whole night fucking around.”
I returned to the register, I hate you.
Then, there were the other patrons - the regulars that came up to the snack window - the ones that were usually vending their goodies. My sweet Dark Angels that rescued me from this horrid purgatory that I had stuck myself into.
To win in my good favor, these sallow, pale Angels - after committing acts in the theater that would had made Caligula turn away in disgust – stood in front of me all smiles, smelling of farts and dried semen, with fists out ready to cop a paper into my trembling paw for leverage later or whatever favors they needed for that moment. Either, it being to acquire the office to smoke and/or shoot from prying eyes of the dope pigeons, or more than often, quick sexual relief.
“Don’t worry, man.” They’d hiss through chapped, gunk lined lips. “I won’t tell the boss.”
All of them were worthless, untrustworthy shits.
I smiled and thought how little the vice squad visited the place - knowing full well that it was a simmering den of junkies and sexual perverts. The junkies knew this, too. All night - every night - nary a cock went unsucked or a line of speed unsorted.
One of those aforementioned regulars was my old pal, Mario from Tijuana. Who stood in the dank opening of the concessions window. Dark, sparkling eyes glared under black bangs at me. He smiled.
“Hey, white boy - howzitgoin’?”
I turned and the jolt of meth addiction quivered up my back. Mario was always holding.
“Hey, man - I thought you’d be here. Come in.”
The short Mexican swung open the closed, bottom half of the door and entered the office. He plopped onto the tattered, overstuffed, midnight-blue lazy chair placed in front of the television that played the movies projected up on the screen in the theater.
I grabbed a soda from the mini fridge by the cash register, handed it to Mario, “How long you been in the theater?”
“Since ‘bout one or two this afternoon.” He placed the can on the dirty, tiled floor, sat up and dug in the front pocket of his filthy jeans. He pulled out a small plastic bag with a zip seal to it. He held it up, black grime under the fingernails. “I got something for ya.”
I grabbed the baggy, examined the white crystals that flaked inside.
Mario eyed me and grinned, “Wanna get high?”
He sing-sang it.
“You gotta ask?”
He removed from the folds of his musty clothes, a small blowtorch lighter and a glass pipe - blackened and charred from far too much use.
Retrieving a good size rock from the plastic bag, Mario dropped it in the end of the pipe that was bulbous with a tiny opening for the dope. He placed the tube end to his chapped lips - flick - and inhaled the gray, resinous smoke into his quivering form.
Grabbing the pipe from his smudged hand, I placed the tip to my mouth and while Mario held the torch, I rotated the pipe left and right, watching the drug in its liquid state ooze back and forth in the bulb - greedily inhaling the gray smoke.
As I passed the pipe back to Mario, the shit hit good - that 200 watt jolt started from the mid-back - tingled up my spine to the nape of the neck, prickling hairs to the forehead like a rush of Orgasmic Death.
I sank into the creaking office chair next to Mario - our teeth ground, tongues clicked on roofs of dry mouths. Hit after hit after hit.
I mechanically looked over to Mario - he sat in trembling vibrations, eyes wide and furious and intense, staring at a black woman who deep throated some old guy’s cock that flashed across the monitor.
Mario unzipped his dirty, black jeans - white and yellow crusted around the crotch - pulled out a long floppy, uncircumcised penis. He slid the skin back - revealing a glistening head.
“Wanna suck my cock?” He breathed; not taking his eyes off of the porn.
I stood up - placed a BACK IN 10 MINUTES sign on the concession door - and closed it. Without a word, I kneeled in front of Mario and slid my lips up and down his stiffening organ. Within minutes - squirt! I leaned over the wastebasket - spit!
As I sat back in the office chair, Mario fumbled with his zipper and then handed me the pipe. I sucked on that, too. The acrid metallic taste filled my lungs - my eyes darted all over the office. The credits began rolling on the porn - I plugged another tape in the video machine. Mario popped up out of the chair.
“Okay, man - gotta jet.” His hand brushed his crotch, grinning, “Thanks for everything, man.”
His face mocked concern as he glanced at the wastebasket. “Why’d you spit it out - thought you liked how I taste?”
“Can never be sure these days, right?” I answered, lighting a cigarette. I handed one to Mario. “You leavin’ or gonna hang in the theater for a while?”
“I gotta meet with this bitch up on 5th. I’ll be back tomorrow.” He opened the concession door, grinning over his shoulder. “Don’t do so much dope, man - that shit’ll kill ya.”
“Hey, Mario.” I called before he got to the theater exit. “Let me get a bag offa ya.”
He turned back to the office, reached into his jean jacket pocket. “I thought you might need some more to get you through the night.”
He smacked a small packet into my palm - I slapped crumpled bills into his. We both said laterz and Mario cut out of the theater into the wet night.
There are many ways that crystal meth can be used.
Meth can be swallowed by placing it into an empty gelatin capsule, mixed with water, or added to coffee. It can be chopped into a fine powder and snorted into the nose with a straw. You can smoke it in a glass pipe, light bulb, or on aluminum foil.
For more hardcore addicts, meth can be injected into a vein with a hypodermic syringe - the effects are faster and more intense - or mixed with water and inserted anally using a syringe without the needle, commonly known in the gay community as getting booty-bumped.
I had done them all.
I preferred smoking it in a pipe. Downside to that was - carry that around and getting stopped by the cops? Well, that could just ruin your whole day - and hiding it at work from sniffing brown-nosers was too risky. There were far too much time to waste with my fellow employees and I am sure they spent more than half their shift just sifting through random shit looking for contraband. I know, I did.
I closed the bottom half of the concession door that led to the theater hall. Rummaging through the shelves that held cleaning supplies, I grabbed a roll of aluminum foil, walked back to the office chair and sat.
I ripped off a slip of aluminum paper about seven inches long by two inches wide. On the counter, I folded the strip long ways and created a groove down the middle. I took a pinch of white, crystallized powder from the plastic bag and sprinkled the stuff carefully onto the groove. I then grabbed a filthy ink pen - just the outer casing was left, I removed the ink tube days ago – now, it was a charred, filthy, warped mess. I positioned the plastic tube in my mouth, lined the far end of the straw up over the groove.
Underneath the aluminum strip, I flicked my lighter and with a steady flame; slowly heated the length of the strip.
The meth liquefied over the heat - evaporating into a gray, resinous smoke which I inhaled through the straw. I slowly heated the dope along the groove, patiently tilting the strip and followed the gray ooze, that chemical death, and drew the smoke into my charred lungs.
My tongue slithered and curled in my mouth - sucking more smoke - teeth clenched, jaw chewed at nothing - sucked more smoke - the tingle spread all along my body, fingers, back, forehead - the porno wavered, the bitches moaned and screamed, “Fuck yeah! Oh fuck me! Yeah!” - sucked more smoke - the gray liquid slid down the groove and I followed like a champ - I sat in the chair fidgeting, squirming - eyes ping-ponging around the small, dirty office - the florescent lights fluttered - the rain hissed - sucked more smoke - the wall clock clicked ominously, insidiously loud - my skin felt clammy - I pinched more into the groove - flick!whoosh!whee! - sticky tongue licked dry lips - taste of aluminum on the back of tongue, throat seared - sucked more smoke - I sat there hyperventilating, twitching in spastic jerks.
My mind raced through a long-winded seminar at an NA meeting that I had attended once concerning the history of methamphetamine.
In a brightly lit hall, amid wafting cigarette smoke and polite coughs, I sat on an iron-folding chair surrounded with five other fiending and bored junkies as an old, pot-bellied man dressed like a retired cop marched to the podium at the front of the stark room and began his rant.
From what the old fart droned on about, Amphetamine was principally synthesized in Germany in 1887, and was considered “a drug in search of a disease” for several years.
Amphetamines came to Japan in 1919, initially marketed as a recreational drug, that was until, its unusual side effects were discovered.
Irritability, aggressive behavior, anxiety, excitement, auditory hallucinations, and paranoia mixed with delusions and psychosis.
I have to admit, meth abusers do tend to be violent and crazy sons of bitches.
Nothing was actually done with this new goldmine until the 1920’s, when experiments were conducted with the hopes that it could treat everything from depression to decongestion.
In the 1930’s, Amphetamine was marketed as Benzedrine and sold in over the counter inhalers to remedy nasal congestion; quite popular with the hip beat writer crowd of the late 40’s - popping them Bennies for a solid kick, pops.
During World War II, meth was used to keep the soldiers fighting. The Allied Forces used a pharmaceutical grade of Amphetamine that was manufactured in chemistry labs.
The Axis Forces consumed meth concocted through a method that the Nazis themselves discovered and manufactured in make-shift labs. Hitler himself was an alleged meth addict and the Japanese Kamikaze pilots used meth before almost every flight because it made them more alert and they could fly for longer periods of time.
In Japan, after World War II, intravenous meth abuse reached epidemic proportions - due to the fact that the Japanese military had large amounts of meth stock-piled and after the war, made it available to the public. The United States Military had used Amphetamine in every war since World War II.
In the Vietnam War, American Soldiers consumed more Amphetamine than the rest of the world did during World War II.
Of course, the United States government categorically denies this and, as usual, judged the narcotic dangerous and handled the situation accordingly by banning sales and deeming it illegal.
During the 1970’s and the 1980’s, biker gangs such as the Hell’s Angels, were responsible for 90% of the methamphetamine produced in the United States.
With biker gangs, meth earned the slang name crank. This was due to the fact that, when the bikers needed to transport meth a long distance, they would hide it in the crank cases of their motorcycles. This worked great for a while, because it was virtually undetectable and the motorcycles functioned perfectly, even with the meth hidden inside.
This monopoly the bikers held had shifted in the late 1980’s - with Mexican gangs/cartels manufacturing meth in Mexico and smuggling it into the U.S. The biker gangs then began purchasing meth from the Mexicans because it was cheaper and easier than manufacturing their own.
Mexico-based traffickers controlled the market for imported meth in the United States. While domestic meth was available, the majority of it seized had originated in Mexico and smuggled into the States via California, Arizona and Texas.
Okay, enough of the history lesson. I’m going to give it to you straight and country simple on how one gets hooked so easily: Meth is a drug that has a distinct characteristic of acting directly on the central nervous system. Meth triggers certain regions of the brain to release dopamine.
When dopamine is released, the user feels a sudden rush of pleasure. This is an artificially induced pleasure sensation, but it does persist and makes the user feel quite consumed with it. The main thing is that the high is felt almost immediately after the user takes the narcotic.
However, the effect doesn’t last long and the person craves more and more of the substance.
The brain will eventually stop the secretion of dopamine as it becomes immunized to the effect of the drug. We all know where this leads - the user will begin consuming more, increasing the habit to a greater level - attempting desperately to achieve that great rush from the first high. That is the hook.
Plain and simple – I had found myself doing the same – consuming more and more and more at all costs to get that first fantastic, orgasmic rush – and which you never will achieve.
This is how the body becomes addicted to meth. Got it?
I do have to admit, meth offers great aphrodisiac properties. When the addict uses the substance, it can and does, cause the addict to have a ravenous craving for sexual releases.
Since meth is mostly used in group settings, such as nightclubs or the occasional adult theater, there always is the chance that the person will indulge in unsafe sexual practices.
This can give rise to insidiously, hazardous complications - such as an increased risk of HIV infection, among other nefarious dilemmas.
However, if you are a hardcore tweeker, you generally didn’t give a fuck. I know, I didn’t.
My mind popped back into what I was doing.
Okay, enough, I thought.
I smiled inward took another hit, Goddamn! This is some good shit!

You Seem Kind of Lost Yourself

“Tweeker. The term was coined for the sleep deprivation crystal meth addicts usually undergo. Some user would stay up for two weeks at a time, so came the phrase ‘two weeker’ which eventually became tweeker. Like, it’s been days since that guy’s gotten any sleep or had something to eat. He’s gotta be a tweeker.”
- Anonymous addict

I gazed up from my beer glass to the scummy concrete stairs that led to the street. The small bar was a hazy, dank room - scuffed, green-velvet pool table, wooden bar warped, a row of wobbly stools, faded lucha libre pictures curled at the corners that had been plastered everywhere on the dark, stained walls. The only color that illuminated the room was from a string of red Christmas lights that sagged at one end over the bar.
An obscene, flesh-colored, rubber dildo attached to dingy, pink panties sat in a dusty cubbyhole behind the register with a scrawled sign in Spanish that asked, “Are these yours?
Outside, the cascading rain came down in black, shimmering sheets to wash away all the evil and filth - in vain.
Above me on street level, the border town of Tijuana sprawled in the battering torrents like an old, bloated, Mexican whore that wallowed in drunken fits of filth and debauchery.
Across her mud-splattered carcass, mariachi music clashed with the mosaic neon of discos thumping hip-hop nonsense at vomiting American teens, doe-eyed prostitutes slouched against dirty, white-washed adobe walls with their come-on looks to the stumbling drunks (The whores grabbed at the pale arms as they passed, needle tracks dreamily fading into smooth, copper flesh), the police slouched on every corner, waiting to shoot somebody or do anything but stand there under hostile eyes. Both the wet, bewildered tourists and calculating, local con-men jolted over incandescent pools of garbage on that drenched night.
Half a cigarette later and I peered to my left – a withered, ancient fucker in a faded, yellow Stetson scrutinizing me through squinted, blood-shot eyes.
He curtly saluted, mouth a black, toothless hole, “Hola!
I silently returned back to my beer - time passed.
Flicked a small, brown cockroach off of the bar into the ice-bin that held the beer bottles. Yawn. I took out a crumpled packet of cigarettes - lit one - through gray smoke, gazed at the clock. He was late.
Cigarette - cigarette - cigarette...
He slopped down the stairs and shuffled into the bar - shoes squished loudly, leaving slime pools on the dirty, muddy floor.
Long wet, obsidian hair covered his face. A brown, square jaw jutted out from beneath his shiny mane. He wore a dirty, black denim jacket, black Metallica t-shirt and jeans.
We both mumbled whutsup and he ordered a beer. Glazed, amber eyes glistened past the shock of limp, black hair that cascaded over Aztec Indian features. A look of intense hostility emitted from that dark, brown face – a smooth face that was both brutal and handsome. He carried an air that he seemed older than his twenty-one years revealed.
He took a puff from one of my cigarettes and asked through silver-capped teeth, “You want?”
We went up and out into the black rain; shimmering sheets of the shit like out of some Mickey Spillane pulp – occasionally illuminated by passing searchlights of prowling, kamikaze taxis, we dashed over incandescent pools and muddy rivers of decaying sewage to a windowless adobe building with a red, iron-bar door.
The both of us stood in the downpour as my dark friend put his thick lips to a small, rectangular cut in the door, “Coo-coo Coo-coo!
He repeated the call three times.
The door was opened by a young fag in a marine fatigue hat - tall and thin in tight, gray jeans and a brown, denim jacket.
Que quieres, Mario?” The fag spat.
Mario mumbled something in Spanish and the fag coyly smiled at me, “Pásale.”
The long, high ceilinged, white-washed landing was dark, lit by flickering candles. In the corner, sat a plump, old mamacita in a red-flowered dress that picked through a bowl of frijoles under a multihued mosaic alter of Guadalupe.
Buenas noches.” She creaked.
We repeated the greeting and followed the fag down the dank hall - smell of mildew and stale tortillas - to a large, dark room occupied with a host of about ten to fifteen Mexicans.
In the dim light, they milled about with red plastic cups in hand as a multi-speaker stereo tootled high-decimal ranchero music. The guests were a mix of young and old working class – hipsters, to be sure - in their dark, ragged, damp clothes. The shadowy din echoed with their festive laughter and caucus conversations.
Mario asked me to wait as he and the fag slinked into the smokey gloom. Left alone at the room’s entrance, I looked down as a gray chicken pecked next to my feet.
Two locals approached me from a nearby group. One held out and offered an extra cup of beer to me.
“Hey, guero - what’s up?” The tall, skinny one asked.
He was attractive – shabby street clothes and shaved head.
The shorter, frog-faced Indian smiled, “Who did you come with?”
I took the beer and pointed into the murk, “A friend - he’s over there.”
Oh, con Mario.” The tall one smiled - asked for a cigarette. “Are you from San Diego?”
He took the cigarette, fished a match out of his pocket and lit it with dirty fingernails.
I explained, “I lived in Tijuana.”
“For reals?” The tall one grinned, incredulously. He took a sip of his beer and asked what I did for a living.
“I write reports for the citizens of the United States.”
“You federale? You look like the FBI.” The short one asked with a menacing smile.
“I get that. A lot.” I croaked.
The tall one put a lean, brown finger up to my lips and smiled, “Loose lips sink ships ‘round here. Don’t worry - later you get your cookies, guero.”
I grinned back. Was this charming thief coming on to me? Without a word, the two faded back into the murk.
The party continued - reggeaton blared as doe-eyed cha-cha girls gyrated lasciviously with pachecos in hip-hop gear as the crowd downed caguama after caguama. I caught snatches of dialogue concerning the six city cops found nearby the previous night: Decapitated, mutilated. Chuckles and smirks. The lights played long, dark shadows on grimy walls as tattoo covered street soldiers passed and gave me a suspicious eye.
Mario returned and we both huddled in a corner, “Tie me up, guero.”
I pulled up his sleeve and wrapped Mario’s black and frayed leather belt around his left arm, tightened it and searched for a vein with cold, shriveled, white fingers.
Mario produced a syringe and handed it to me - I slid it under his smooth, copper skin and up into a protruding vein. I pushed the plunger and watched with curious morbidity as the junk emptied into his body - his eyes slacked and he dreamily clawed at the belt with numbed fingers.
Leaning against the gray, crumbling wall, he passed me the syringe, “You want?”
I glanced off into the hazy room. Two, flabby Latina girls began dancing to reggeaton in the middle of the gray concrete floor - the crowd clapped along.
Through the murky darkness on the other side, I saw the flick-flickering of lighters; the red cherries of stems. Patter of mumbling junkies.
“Smoke that crank! Fucker…”
“You fucking tweeker, get the fuck out of the fucking window, they can see you!"
“Who’s got my lighter?!”
“No more…no mas…”
“Bitch! There was more in this sack! Where the fuck did my speed go?”
Que quieres?!
“What’s in the bowl, bitch?!”
“Who’s look’n?”
“Good ones.”
“Quitters never win, and winners never quit.”
My glazed eyes snapped back into focus as the words echoed away into my head.
“Nah, Mario - I’ll be right back.” I said, distractedly.
I left Mario to his mess and walked across the room to a smiling lesbian and a short, grinning Indian guy.
They were holding a glass pipe and when they saw me shuffling up, they both said, “Bienvenidos” – as they offered the pipe up to me.
Speed. Meth. Chalk. Ice. Crystal. Crank. Tweek. Glass. Those are some of the many street names for methamphetamines. Call it what you want - it all means the same insidious shit.
Speaking strictly from experience - it’s not a nice drug. It’s not even a particularly fun drug. Unless your idea of a good time is being wired to a teeth-grinding point for 48 hours, unable to sleep, while at the same time being a selfish, violent bastard to all and sundry.
Meth addiction is cunning as much as it is baffling.
For me, it began as a harmless and fun thing to do and then; before I knew it, my entire life became centered on the shit to the point where I couldn’t imagine life without out it. The real sad part about speed is that the user never notices how messed up their lives have become.
Back to the party in progress - I said thank you, coughed, and took a hit. The current began at my spine, rushing up across the back of my skull to the forehead. My mind popped into astute focus of all that was around me – every detail was amplified. A surge of adrenaline washed through me and my hands began to shake. My breath quickened as all nerve centers throughout my body pleasantly lit up like a carnival marquee.
I pulled out a crumpled one-hundred peso note and handed it to the grinning lesbian.
“Okay...okay.” She smiled big and friendly behind silver-capped teeth and I smoked my fill.
Pop. Crackle.
With concentrated jerks, I returned to Mario leaning slumped against the wall, strung out - one hand held his pants, the other grasped the syringe. I gulped my beer - smoked - inquired where the baño was.
Found an old, wooden door and opened it to a chunky girl squatting in front of a young cholo who was leaning against the sink - she was sucking his cock. I mumbled perdóname and closed the door to gray wafts of marijuana smoke.
A few couples had begun an obscene mambo bop in the middle of the large, smokey room as I attempted to locate another door to take a much needed piss.
Out back on the muddy, cobblestone patio, I approached two guys with their cocks out, urinating into the rain. I joined them.
One was the tall pelon from inside, “Hey! The journalista!”
He smiled as rain dripped down his lean face, catching on his mustache.
The other was the fag in the Marine cap.
I was soon to find out that they were in the middle of sizing up each other’s penis - in the cold, gloomy rain - I guess when you have to, you have to. I joined them and relived my bladder.
“This way, guero.” The fag said, smiling.
The fag coyly motioned us to follow him up iron stairs to a room with weather-beaten French doors.
The cubicle was bare and lit by candlelight - a dresser, Army cot, nails on the wall for jackets. We passed around a bottle of Petron and a joint. Long, dark shadows shimmied against yellowed, grimy walls.
I sat on an old, metal chair as the fag and the cholo sat on the bed.
The fag passed the bottle to the cholo and cooed with a fey side glance towards me, “Isn’t he adorable. Muy guapo.”
“Yeah”, I grinned, taking another hit off of the joint. “I’d milk him like a cow every morning.”
Orale.” The tall pelon leaned back on the bed and smiled, “What to do? I am in a room with two, horny jotos...what to do?”
The fag noticed the same thing I did - the growing erection in the pelon’s dark khakis.
The fag and I looked at each other, I smiled and he smirked, “Porque no?
Indeed. Why not?
Playfully unzipping his pants, the penis was pulled out from said khakis as the fag and I took turns on that long, brown fucker.
Eventually, the pelon sighed, lifting up his white t-shirt as globs of pearly semen spurted onto his flat, brown stomach.
I sat up and watched as the fag slurped and licked up the remaining goo to the smiling satisfaction of the cholo. Before he bolted out the door and into the gloom, the pelon hit me up for fifty pesos - why not?
The fag and I, Ishmael, he said his name was - sat and talked, smoking weed and finished the bottle of tequila.
“You like the crystal?” He asked as he looked into my ping-ponging eyes.
“No, not really.”
“Then why do you do it? It is so bad.”
I whispered broodingly, “I don’t know.”
I really didn’t - self destructive, I guessed. Nevertheless, was anything self-destructive when done in moderation? I think not. So, fuck you.
Ishmael rose up and played some somber jazz sax on his little, ratty digital radio. He then lay next to me on his side; hand on my leg, “I am so hot, guero. You wanna fuck me?”
I took a puff of my cigarette, “Uhm...no. No. You are nice – really. But I gotta get back downstairs. I came with a friend and uh - he’s lost without me.”
I stood up - his hand slithered off my thigh - and headed to the door.
“You seem kind of lost yourself.” He stated with a worried, sincere look.
I mumbled thanks and walked out into the black storm.

Morning Coffee

Disjointed night of sleep, again, okay. It’s early and as much as I’d like to I know I won’t fall asleep again. Headache. Dizzy. This morning’s got a rough feel to it already. I’m pissed off at myself for not getting enough sleep, again, like I’ve got a say in the matter. I do all the things I’m supposed to do, so they say, to get at least one fucking good night of sleep. I ache.
Exercise before sleeping. No, wait, no physical activity before bed. Don’t eat too late. Drink hot tea. Turn off the lights and the television. Leave the television on. Stretch. Don’t stretch. Have a hot shower. Count backwards from a hundred. Count sheep. Don’t think a thought. Think nice and pleasant thoughts. Go to bed early. Wake up early.
Bullshit. Disingenuous fuckers. Leeches. I resent them and I resent myself. I’m not sure if I resent anyone. I’ve got a toxic fire and I’m spreading it in every direction. I’ve been up for ten minutes.
No point in lying here. No point for this bitter bile I’m puking up on myself. Self-indulgent. Just get up. Just get my morning coffee.

Inward and Outward.

I am never in need of a map, except for when I attempt to explore someone else’s mind. I wander streets I can’t pronounce to find graveyards; open fields; skyscrapers and wells. You are a city and I want to know your suburbs. I’d like to know your poor neighborhoods. Your backroads littered with garbage and cracking asphalt. Listen to your symphonies of warning sirens and distant shouting. I want to see the non-touristy parts; your inner parts.

And, once again, I find myself entering the Heart of Darkness...

I Will Never Love Anyone Again.

There I was, curled up in a ball, with my arms wrapped tightly around my knees, breathing slow, and heavy. The kind of breath you breathe after sex, when it’s good, and your bones are full of this weak kind of overwhelming satisfaction, as you bite your bottom lip and grin. But I was far from grinning. He’d left me with no assurance that he’d ever return, with not one slap that forced my head all the way to the right, as I buried my face into my shoulder. He gave me silence, accompanied by a dead stare. A stare I didn’t understand how to read. Did he not love me anymore? Did he hate me? Worse, did he no longer give a fuck? Nothing. I pushed and shoved him, screamed until my voice was swallowed into the walls; he wasn’t listening, he wasn’t responding to anything. Just silence, and a dead stare. I could feel myself trying to hold back my tears, he showed me no emotion, so why the hell should I? Yet I couldn’t help it. My eyes were a stormy night, cloudy with confusion, rainy with a warm sorrow I only wished he could feel against his fingertips as he wiped my tears away, veins vivid like a scarlet lightning full of a rage that only showed my passion, pupils dilated, I wanted him. I wanted him to shove me harder than I’d shoved him. I wanted him to have me pressed up against the wall by his forearm as I pointed my toes and tried to reach the ground, breathless from an anger that promised me a tomorrow. I wanted to feel his fists pound against my thigh as he left me a big purple bruise. I wanted him to bite me, sink his teeth into my shoulder, where his lips would eventually make their way to my neck, and his chest against mine, and his fingers on my cock yanking wildly. I wanted to feel his love and his lust and his rage and his hatred for me and anything else in the world, and I swear I would’ve absorbed it like water to a sponge. I wanted to feel his fingers wrapped up in my hair as he arched my back up and into him as we fucked away our troubles and reminded ourselves why we’d always be together. I lost myself for a moment, in all my wishes and wants, thinking they were actually happening. Still I had silence, and a dead stare. His face began to sculpt into something, rather someone, which I had no recognition of. It looked hard, but exquisite, like a fine marble. I just wanted to lick his lips and slither my tongue right in between them, hoping that if he weren’t listening to my words, perhaps somehow I can wear them at the very tip of my tongue just enough so he could taste them, and swallow them deep into his gut the way he did my cum. It was useless though, his jaw was clenched too tight, his teeth were like a tall and beautiful, freshly painted, white picket fence I didn’t want to break entry to. His silence, and his dead stare, his tough embodiment, his numbness, was all too much for me to bare. I’d given up on the idea of fixing something I’d ruined. I don’t know how I ruined it but I did, I know I did. He turned around finally, walked down the stairs and stood by the door. I followed. He paused and cracked his marble as he leaned in for a very light kiss, and whispered “I love you.” I said it back, because I did, but I couldn’t tell if this was goodbye or see you later. I slammed the door, pissed off at not knowing what had just happened, walked upstairs and into my room, slammed that door too. I licked my lips thoroughly, because that might have been the last time I’d ever get to taste him. And there I was, curled up in a ball, with my arms wrapped tightly around my knees, breathing slow, and heavy. The kind of breath you breathe after sex, when it’s good, and your bones are full of this weak kind of overwhelming satisfaction, as you bite your bottom lip and grin. But I was far from grinning.

You're a Drunktard Lost in these Tijuana Nights

I fall on my ass and I’m outside, sitting next to Saul and a pond and we’re having some sort of picnic. It’s sunny out and the air is clear, and his black hair waves about in the tranquil breeze. He’s all smiles and bumble-bees and he looks good in his black denim jacket. I try to smile but there’s blood and broken teeth. Saul puts his thin, brown hand out towards my face, says something, but it gets lost in the mirage.
And then a white flash. Back to reality. Raucous noise of hollering Mexicans:
The queers behind me move away from the bar and I get some blood on their Abercrombie & Fitch shirts and their designer jeans. He grabs the back of my collar and throws me to the floor. The air gets knocked out of me and my vision begins wobbling. He kicks and my ribs, get a burn. Someone yells to let me up and he laughs and steps back. I get to my knees and someone helps me to my feet, pushes me in. I put my hands up and try to wrap my head ‘round things. I throw a punch and he dodges, follows with a body shot and I cringe. He steps back and laughs some more, takes a hit off a joint making the rounds. The fags begin screaming and the pretty boys start hollering and I catch my composure and put my hands back up.
Crazy mambo jazz be-bop blares from the rockola. A bottle half-empty with Fundador is alone at the bar littered with wadded napkins and beer nut husks.
Something puts weight in my boots and I stand up and stare at him. Things make sense and I let him strut about high-fiving his lackeys. My nose is clear and my fists are tight. He looks back and seems a bit surprised that I’m still standing, still staring. When he comes forward I fake another takedown and get his shoulders to dip. With his face coming down I bring my fist back up and force my middle knuckle into his nose. I feel it break and I feel the ring rip into his skull. He steps back dazed, and I put a left into his kidney, and a knee to his open jaw when he buckles. There are bones broken in him and I pounce. The heel of my boot breaks into his ribs and the glittery fags on the bar stop dancing. A beating happens and I lose myself again. The white becomes red and the strong becomes the shattered, bruised, and bottom. They all stop yelling. Smoke lingers - grey and acidic - about us and lets me catch my breath.
“Check him,” someone in the back says.
A thin, Mexican man runs up and checks the guy’s pulse. We wait like tension and sweat and I could really go for a fucking drink.
The man looks up at me and announces to the room he’s out. They all start whispering and murmuring in Spanish and it all grows to be a mob of chatter until that voice speaks out again.
“Bring him up.”
The Mexicans part and a kid pushes up a man in a wheelchair, old and hooked up to a tank of air. The kid locks the wheels and gets back in the crowd. The old man waits ‘til it’s silent and then he coughs and hacks. He pulls out a tissue from under his plaid blanket and wipes away some blood, puts it back under.
I’m sweating and bleeding and only came in to make a phone call, but all I fucking want is a shot of fucking tequila.
“Anything to say, Americano?”
I shrug, wipe my nose.
“What do you want?” the old man gargles up.
“Uh, Fundador.”
“Admirable.”  And he nods to someone behind me.
I look back and the flash hits me before the bang.
I fall back and I’m outside again. Saul’s lying next to me and it’s night out. The stars come in clear and I point a few out to him, the ones I’ve heard about. He curls up and we bundle up in the soft, Mexican blanket, the engine of his father’s junker purring beneath us, warm and soothing. I kiss his smooth, copper cheeks and he asks me what I think space smells like.
“Like bubblegum.”

Because...

Easy To Be a Drunk

Everyone thinks it's easy to be a drunk
everyone thinks they can
be a drunk or an alcoholic,
but my friend,
my enemy,
and the ones in-between
you simply do not understand
what it takes
to break yourself apart
night after night
with a shot of this
and a shot of that
you think you are capable
of doing anything
but this
I assure you
is a fallacy
so keep drinking your
pretentious glass of
100 proof lies

the river
separates us
for a reason

until you figure out
that reason
you’ll never cross
the bridge
you can’t find

Even Rentboys Get The Blues.

Once upon a time there lay the most beautiful young man, lost in a deep slumber. His jet-black hair glinted in the sunlight, his rosebud lips were parted in peace. On, he slept, as the town jostled to life outside his window. Oblivious to the world, deep in an enchanted dream. On, he slept, until the sun had slid beneath the horizon. The spell was broken. He opened his eyes.
He awoke in the dark with a jolt, swore, and immediately fumbled for his cigarettes. After many deep drags, he swore again, and slid out of bed, his oily hair stubbornly clinging to semen and sweat stained sheets. Cigarette in mouth, he staggered towards the bathroom, last night’s underwear still trailing miserably around his ankles. I shouldn’t drink so much, he decides. Gives him the most fucked up nightmares. His eyes are glued shut with mucus but the harsh fluorescent bathroom light still made him shudder and squint. He ignored the dirty, holey socks drying over the bath, the torn, bloodied boxers lying in the sink, and reached for his makeup bag.
He’s been in this hotel room before. He remembers the distinct stain on the ceiling - if he squints and turns his head it almost looks like spider, stretching out long grotesque limbs to catch him and gobble him up. He suppresses a sigh and instead forces out a theatrical moan which ignites a flashbulb of sordid images, he moans to spur on the stranger on top of him. It works, and the stranger thrusts and lunges harder, (Distinct mixed stench of cheap cologne and halitosis) mumbling that he’s the fucking best, baby. He pushes away the stranger’s slobbering mouth and twists his watch around; the stranger has three minutes left to use him and take him back on his corner. His Handsome Prince for three minutes; after all, the stranger’s taking care of him, crying out that he loves him. He moans a little louder, and decides he’ll need alcohol to sleep again tonight.
